JENSEN BEACH, FLORIDA – The dreams of a Babe Ruth World Series title didn’t quite come true for the Mount Washington Under-8 Softball All-Stars, but the team still turned in a strong performance in the week long event in Florida that concluded on Saturday.

Overall, the team finished with a 4-4 record and did claim the title in the ‘Diamond Bracket’, a five-team bracket for all of the teams that didn’t make it at least to the loser’s bracket final.

In the Diamond Bracket final, Mount Washington defeated the Germantown All-Stars by an 8-2 score. Germantown, from Louisville, had beaten Mount Washington twice earlier in the event.

The eight-team Babe Ruth World Series had started for Mount Washington with ‘pool’ play on July 30. In the very first game of the tournament, Mount Washington dropped a 14-2 decision to Manasses County, a team from Virginia that would eventually claim the crown.

A day later, it was a great learning experience for the young team as they took on a team from Bonkid, China. This was the first time that Babe Ruth had teams from China as that nation sent teams to both the U-10 and U-8 tournaments. Mount Washington beat the foreign team 12-0.

Later on that Tuesday, Mount Washington suffered a tough 4-3 loss to Germantown after being up 3-1 through three innings.

After not playing on Wednesday due to some weather issues, Mount Washington entered bracket play as the number three seed from the ‘Strips’ Division. That put them against the number two team from the ‘Stars’ Division, the Oveido All-Stars. That was a tough game before Oveido advanced with a 7-4 win.

Mount Washington then stayed alive with a 13-3 win against the Boonville All-Stars. Unfortunately, on Friday morning, Aug. 3, Mount Washington was eliminated from championship play with a 12-3 loss to Germantown.

Now in the Diamond Division, Mount Washington defeated St. Charles Parish 11-0 in one semi-final. That set up the rematch with Germantown and this time Mount Washington came out on top, winning 8-2 for the bracket title.

Team members for the Mount Washington U-8 All-Stars included: Lily Alvey, Eylee Cook, Lilly Crumbacker, Haley Durbin, Abigail Halbrook, Payton Holt, Camryn Kidwell, Peyton Mardian, Kinnley Murphy, Tessa Park, Avah Waits, Ryleigh Watrous and Kylee Willis.

The head coach for the team is Taylor Watrous. His assistant coaches were William Crumbacker, Donald Mardian and Michael Parker.

Over the summer, the Mount Washington U-8 Softball All-Stars finished as the third place team in the Kentucky State Tournament at Fern Creek before winning the Ohio Valley Regional Tournament in Glasgow.
