  • Mercy nips Bullitt East 4-3 in...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – Not even Mother Nature could stop a classic high school softball game.

A 70-minute rain delay in the top of the third inning just let the focus become more intense in the championship game of the 24th District Tournament between defending state champion Mercy and Bullitt East.

  • BC can't figure out Trojan...

OKOLONA – The defense was nearly perfect. The pitching was stellar.

Unfortunately for the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars on Tuesday in the championship game of the 24th District Softball Tournament, the bats were left somewhere out in the cold.

Bullitt Central had very little offense for the big game. Still, it took nine innings before the Southern Lady Trojans scored a run to pull out a 2-1 victory.

  • Chargers shut out field to claim...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – It would take more than some rain and lightning to keep the Bullitt East Chargers from defending its 24th District baseball title on Wednesday.

The thunder inside the Charger bats may not have been as loud and as long as head coach Jeff Bowles may have wanted. But the Chargers were good enough to turn back the Jeffersontown Chargers 5-0 to earn its first crown in the 24th District.

Both teams will advance to the Sixth Region tournament, which opens play on Monday, May 27.

  • Eagles snap drought with win...

OKOLONA – In a dogfight for the school’s first district baseball title in 10 years, veteran North Bullitt skipper Brian Wise went into his bag of surprises.

While not particularly fond of the notion of a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded and a lefty at the plate, Wise felt he had to do something in the 1-1 game on Tuesday.

And, after the play worked once, he decided to do it again.

  • Momma J honored

Last Tuesday before the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars took on Presentation, the softball and baseball teams honored the wife of softball assistant coach Rob Johnson.

Sherry Johnson passed away over the winter after a long battle with cancer.

Momma J, as she was affectionately known, was a big supporter of the softball team.

Daughter Amanda threw out the first pitch.

The Bullitt Central players wore special jerseys for the game and many wore homemade arm bands.

  • Recktenwald shuts out Whitefield...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – What could have been one of those ‘trap’ games that all coaches fear, turned out to be nothing of the sort on Monday as the Bullitt East Chargers opened play in the 24th District Baseball Tournament with a 9-0 win over Whitefield Academy.
