SHEPHERDSVILLE — Thanks to a partnership with the University of Kentucky, Bullitt County students will have another option to acquire college credits in high school.
And the option will come with its own options for student participation.
Bullitt County Public Schools will participate in the University of Kentucky’s Dual Credit program. Students may take courses in-person at the BCPS Career Readiness Center, or could complete them online via the Bullitt Virtual Learning Academy.
“We will provide transportation to (Riverview Opportunity Center),” said Dominic McCamish, principal of specialized programs at ROC. “The BVLA students can take the classes from their home school via Chromebook. They can take a flex class without having to travel, it saves on time.”
According to McCamish, every class begins online, hosted by a UK professor.
“We then provide a classroom facilitator who helps with projects and tutoring,” he added.
The inaugural courses include CIS 110 and 111, Composition and Communication I and II. McCamish said the college classes would also count as high school English 3 and 4.
CIS 110 will take place in Fall 2024, with CIS 111 in Spring 2025. Another course, PSY 100, Introduction to Psychology, will be available in the spring. The course will be offered in-person only.
A dual credit course in the fall, through Jefferson Community and Technical College, is also being established.
“We may add other courses as the program develops,” McCamish said.
Students will attend the classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but will also visit ROC on Tuesdays and Thursdays for tutoring time and project work. Transportation will be provided to and from Bullitt East and North Bullitt High Schools (Bullitt Central is located next door to ROC).
The students participating through BVLA will participate in scheduled Zoom time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“The only requirements to participate in the program are that the students are juniors and seniors and they have a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher, that’s it,” McCamish said.
According to McCamish, free tuition will be provided for students who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Other students will pay $95 per credit hour, much less than the regular in-state tuition cost of $541 per hour.
McCamish also mentioned that if a student has already used up their dual credits, BCPS will pay the tuition costs. He added that all UK classes would transfer to other state public universities.
