School board does homework as it prepares for 2023

Bullitt District Judge Jennifer Porter swares in Dr. Matt Mooney as the newest member of the Bullitt County School Board. Mooney is joined by his wife and three of the couple’s four daughters.

SHEPHERDSVILLE – The beginning of a new year brings about some housekeeping tasks which must be accomplished by the Bullitt County School Board.

One of which is to swear any new member of the school board.

Dr. Matt Mooney and Lisa Hodges will begin four-year terms on the school board.

Bullitt County District Judge Jennifer Porter issued the oath of office to Mooney as his family watched. Mooney was elected to fill the seat formerly held by Debby Atherton, who opted to not run for a third term.

Hodges, who will begin her second term on the board, was not able to be present and would be sworn in at a later time.

The next task to tackle would be the selection of officers.

Darrell Coleman would be selected as the chairman of the board. He previously served as vice-chair.

Linda Belcher was selected as the vice-chair-person with superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon serving as board secretary.

Belcher, who served as a state representative, volunteered to serve as the board’s legislative network member.

And the board set its schedule of regular meetings and workshop sessions for the reest of 2023.

All meetings would be held at 5 p.m. at the Frank Hatfield Administrative Center on Highway 44 East.

However, it didn’t take long to make a change in the meeting schedule.

With Belcher out of town for the Feb. 27 meeting and with a need to get a bid package for the football stadium improvements needed as soon as possible, the board amended the schedule. The regular meeting will now be held on Monday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. For students and staff, this is an off day, unless needed for a snow day  makeup.

Along with assignments for the school board, the district’s finance corporation also needed to elect leadership members.

Coleman will serve as president with Belcher as the vice president. The rest of the board will be directors.

Bacon will serve as secretary and finance officer Lisa Lewis will be the treasurer.

            In other business:

*Jo Coffman requested the board work on getting school crossing guards. She said Bullitt Central High is particular bad due to the many motorists who travel Highway 44.

She also mentioned the concern to new mayor Jose Cubero to see if the Shepherdsville Police could be part of the solution.

*Attorney Eric Farris introduced Emily Vessels to the board members.

He said Vessels works closely with him on school district duties and she would be his primary backup.

The next regular meeting of the Bullitt County School Board will be on Monday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. at the Frank Hatfield Administrative Center. The public is invited.
