MOUNT WASHINGTON — The students and staff are moved in and education is underway, so it was time for the community to get the experience.
Old Mill Elementary hosted an open house along with a ribbon cutting thanks to the Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s a beautiful school,” said Chamber ambassador Bill Laird. “The families should be proud of this building.”
The guest list included Sen. Mike Nemes and Bullitt County judge/executive Jerry Summers, while city treasurer Alice Harris represented Mount Washington.
“This is a great school, with great kids, and there are great parents in this community,” Nemes said.
“This new facility is a great asset to our community and to our local education,” said Summers.
Bullitt County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon said the building showed that the district, and the school, were going beyond just academic standards.
“A lot of thought went into it,” he said. “We thought about many ways to help the teachers and the students.”
Bacon thanked former Old Mill principal Dr. Brandy Howard and current principal Brittany Joiner for dealing with the new building plans and the overall changes to the school community.
The superintendent also thanked assistant superintendent Adrienne Usher and the district student learning team for helping with the building’s vision and design, as well as Cate Ward and Studio Kremer Associates for “bringing that vision to fruition.”
“I also want to thank the (BCPS) board members, both past and present, who were involved with the plans, as well as the Old Mill staff,” he said.
School board vice-chair Linda Belcher was very impressed with the facility and wished the community future success.
“Can’t you just feel the excitement in the air when you walk into the building,” she said.
Joiner said the school would not be there without the continuing support from Old Mill families. She also credited Howard, who started with the plans.
“The hard work for two years paid off,” Joiner said. “It was a smooth transition. It’s not just a new building, it’s a new home. Everything was designed around collaboration. We now have the opportunity to live out our school mission.”
