HEBRON ESTATES – Finally.
After not playing a game for almost three weeks, the North Bullitt softball program finally got back into action last week, splitting four games, equaling their win total over the first third of the season.
The Lady Eagles did not have a spring break trip planned this year so did not play any games that week. When the regular season was supposed to resume the next week, poor weather kept just about every team in the area out of action.
Finally, last Monday, the Lady Eagles got to play. It was a better performance, but the team still lost to Holy Cross 5-3. The third win of the season came on Tuesday as the green and gold rolled past Christian Academy 14-4 in six innings. After another close loss, 3-0 to Sacred Heart, the Lady Eagles made up a rained out 23rd District game against Southern, cruising to a 19-0 win in three innings.
The victory over Southern moved North Bullitt to 2-0 in district play as they have already beaten Moore. The Lady Eagles were set to play Bullitt Central on Wednesday in Shepherdsville with the winner getting the number one seed for the post-season tournament which will be played the week of May 20th.
Obviously, Southern is having a tough season. North Bullitt scored their 19 runs on just three hits. The green and gold scored 11 runs in the first inning and eight more in the second. The game was called after Southern failed to score in the top of the third frame. The Lady Trojans did not have a hit in the game, but had two runners reach base – one on an error and another on a dropped third strike.
North Bullitt sophomore pitcher Amree Hammons was in complete control. She faced just 11 batters and all nine outs recorded in the game were by strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles made timely use of their three hits. Gabrielle Coy, a junior, hit a home run and drove in five runs in the game. Sydney Wiseman, a junior, stroked a triple as she drove in three runs. The other hit was a single by Paige Brooks. North Bullitt batters walked 13 times and did not strike out in the contest.
To start the week, North Bullitt could just not generate enough offense to catch visiting Holy Cross. The Lady Cougars jumped on top 4-0 after four innings. North Bullitt scored a run in the fifth and then after Holy Cross scored a run in the top of the seventh, the green and green and gold scored twice in the bottom of the seventh before the game ended.
Holy Cross had nine hits to just four for the Lady Eagles. Only two North Bullitt batters had hits as both Ava Kenney and Hammons each had two. One of Kenney’s hits was a double.
Hammons pitched the first five innings in this game for the Lady Eagles, allowing four earned runs. Coy pitched the last two innings, giving up one unearned run.
North Bullitt found some offense on Tuesday, cruising past Christian Academy 14-4 in six innings. The Lady Eagles scored the first eight runs of the game and never looked back.
The green and gold had 13 hits in the win, including four triples with two by Alia Pearce and one each from Sofia Young and Addison Ferguson. Coy also had a double in the hit parade.
Hammons got the win as she pitched into the sixth inning. Coy then came on to get the final two outs to secure the win.
On Thursday, North Bullitt collected 10 hits, two more than Sacred Heart, but the Lady Eagles could not turn those hits into runs as they fell 3-0 to the private school in Louisville.
The only extra base hit for the Lady Eagles was a double by Wiseman. Young had three hits in the game, while Ferguson had two.
Sacred Heart scored twice in the first inning off starting pitcher Hammons. The sophomore went the distance for the Lady Eagles, giving up eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
This could be another short week for the Lady Eagles as they are scheduled to play only the first three days of this week with the game against Bullitt Central on Wednesday being the last for the week. The program does have four games scheduled for next week.
The Lady Eagles started this week with a 4-10 record.
